Malaysia publishes circulars on data-protection officers, data-breach notifications

( February 26, 2025, 10:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Commissioner has published circulars and guidelines detailing the country's new requirements for appointing data protection officers, or DPOs, and mandatory data breach notifications. The circulars specify which companies must appoint a DPO — for example, those processing the financial information of more than 10,000 data subjects — and outline the necessary qualifications for the role. They also define when a data breach must be reported, such as when it affects more than 1,000 data subjects, and mandate that the commissioner be notified within 72 hours of discovery, with affected data subjects informed within seven days.
