Telegram fined $608,000 over Australian watchdog's online-safety questions

( February 23, 2025, 23:04 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia’s e-safety office has hit instant-messaging service Telegram Messenger with a fine of A$967,000 ($608,000) for failing to respond to a transparency-reporting notice deadline by over five months, which led to a delay in the publication of critical information. In a statement, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner said that in March 2024, it handed legally enforceable transparency reporting notices to Google, Meta Platforms, Telegram, Reddit, WhatsApp and X, requiring each company to answer questions about their compliance with the Basic Online Safety Expectations, a key element of Australia’s Online Safety Act.
