This added layer of security, which is optional for users, protects cloud data with end-to-end encryption. Earlier this month, the company was reportedly asked by the UK government to give it access to users’ encrypted data under a controversial security law. While its statement today doesn’t mention the request, Apple said it’s “gravely disappointed the protections provided will not be available” for British customers.
