Japan's PPC proposes stricter data protection rules for cookies, facial images, data brokers

( February 20, 2025, 03:24 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission has proposed stricter regulations on the use of cookies, facial recognition systems and data brokers as part of its review of the data protection law. The PPC aims to apply data protection rules to personally referrable information, such as phone numbers, email addresses and cookie identifiers to prevent misuse, including crimes and fraud. Additionally, the commission suggests that operators of facial recognition systems should make it easier for individuals to request the suspension of the use of their facial-image data. Data brokers would also be required to identify the purpose of data use before providing the data to third parties. The statement, in Japanese, is attached....
