Carmaker association urges EU Commission to 'reverse' withdrawal of patent regulation

( February 17, 2025, 16:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association urges the European Commission to "reverse its decision to withdraw" the proposed regulation on standard-essential patent licensing. In a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vries warned that SEP holders, mainly non-European companies, refuse to license suppliers and demand high royalties from vehicle manufacturers under threat of injunctions. The association argues that the regulation would have provided a clearer, more transparent licensing framework to reduce litigation. ACEA also calls for updates to the Technology Transfer Block Exemption Regulation to ensure fairer licensing conditions and warns that Europe’s auto industry could fall behind other regions like China without regulatory action.See letter attached....
