New Zealand regulator warns of privacy risks for tenants

( February 12, 2025, 01:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The pressure to find housing quickly, particularly for students, can lead to rushed decisions and potential privacy risks for both tenants and landlords, the New Zealand privacy regulator warned. In a statement today, New Zealand’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner said that tenants should be aware of their privacy rights when applying for an apartment and also of the obligations that landlords have under the country’s 2020 Privacy Act. New Zealand’s Privacy Commissioner Michael Webster said that landlords need to know what information they can “legally collect, and when.” He added that apartment owners need to ensure that personal information collected during the rental-application process is kept secure and is “not disclosed without authorization.” The statement added that the regulator had also updated its guidance for the rental sector. The full statement from New Zealand’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner follows:...
