Online platforms aren't required to check content of ads, EU court opinion says

( February 6, 2025, 09:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Online platforms aren't obliged to systematically check the content of advertisements, including personal data, before they are published on their websites, according to a non-binding opinion for the EU Court of Justice. Advocate General Maciej Szpunar said that the operators of online marketplaces must, however, take organizational and technical measures to protect personal data. EU judges are considering questions referred from from a Romanian court in a case involving a complaint against Publi24.ro, a website of Russmedia, that was brought by an unnamed women who claimed her data was unlawfully posted online.The press release and the advocate general opinion are attached.
