Japanese dark-pattern use targeted by planned certification system

( January 30, 2025, 04:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A Japanese private-sector initiative against dark patterns today published draft countermeasure guidelines for public comment, outlining the criteria for an upcoming Non-Deceptive Design certification system set to launch in July. The Association for Countermeasures Against Dark Patterns said the system will involve a third-party reviewer to certify websites that do not use dark patterns, and provide a tamper-proof mark to help consumers identify trustworthy sites. The guidelines were developed with input from experts and government observers. Public comments will be accepted until March 5, with a symposium on the topic scheduled for Feb. 14.
