Japanese recruitment company told to stop deceptive data collection, delete records

( January 29, 2025, 10:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- Japanese construction recruitment company Beavers received today a corrective recommendation from the Personal Information Protection Commission for improperly collecting the personal information of more than 10,000 construction workers. The Tokyo-based company compiled a database and used the data for recruitment purposes. Since around April 2023, the PPC said Beavers had been gathering phone numbers of construction site managers by examining notice boards and other public sources, as well as contacting the workers' companies and deceitfully obtaining phone numbers by misrepresenting their identity and intentions. Beavers also misled the PPC during hearings by lying and submitting falsified reports. Some workers received phone calls from Beavers for unsolicited job transfer information, and this practice may still be ongoing.
