Apple, KakaoPay hit with privacy fines in South Korea over illegal data transfers

( January 23, 2025, 03:26 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: KakaoPay and Apple have been fined a total of 8.4 billion won (about $5.8 million) by South Korea's privacy watchdog for illegally transferring personal data overseas. According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, KakaoPay was fined 6 billion won for sharing the data of 40 million users with Alipay without consent, enabling non-sufficient fund, or NSF, score calculations that assess payment-default risks. Apple received a 2.4 billion won fine for failing to disclose its data processing outsourcing to Alipay. Beyond the fines, the regulator ordered both companies to implement proper data transfer protocols, while requiring Alipay to destroy its NSF scoring models built with the unauthorized data.The statement, in Korean, is attached. ...
