Music collecting society GEMA sues Suno AI for copyright violation in Munich

( January 21, 2025, 09:44 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: GEMA filed a lawsuit against Suno AI with the Munich Regional Court, accusing Suno of using the Germany-based music collecting society's copyrighted repertoire of songs without a license to train AI models. GEMA claims that the American AI music creation program is exploiting musicians' works commercially without giving them a financial share. "Generative AI tools such as the music tool from Suno Inc. unabashedly use the compositions and texts that do not belong to them," said Ralf Weigand, chair of the GEMA supervisory board, in the press release. Weigand said that to ensure the continuity of human-generated music "we urgently need a legal framework that ensures that authors receive an appropriate share of the value created by AI providers." The lawsuit comes after GEMA's similar complaint against Open AI in November. See press release attached in German....
