New Zealand data-portability bill gets parliamentary committee's approval

( January 7, 2025, 05:17 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A New Zealand parliamentary committee has approved the data-portability bill with recommendations to include additional privacy protections for customers. In its final report published recently, the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee said that the 2024 Customer and Product Data Bill introduced in May 2024 should be passed but the legislation must place “greater emphasis on the needs of consumers.” The committee recommended that the legislation add requirement to ensure that the customer must give the authorization sought by accredited data requester expressly, and that the customer must be “reasonably informed” about what it relates to. The report also recommended that the data holders should have the option to reject requests for data. The full report published by the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee is attached....
