UK regulator’s ‘pragmatic’ approach to online safety could reduce new act’s impact

The updated codes fire a starting-gun on a three-month countdown to submit a risk assessment, which itself triggers the need to comply with any risks found. But while the regulator Ofcom wants to appear ready to enforce on the spot, it will take a “pragmatic” approach to platforms’ situations. This could open the door to tech companies’ obfuscatory tactics.Online platforms operating in the UK face fines of up to 10 percent of global turnover if they fail to comply with the first substantial tranche of the Online Safety Act to go into effect. A three-month countdown has begun for them to conduct a self-assessment of any risks they pose to users regarding illegal harms....
