( December 12, 2024, 10:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: VB Assets will receive a $0.25 ongoing royalty on two patents and $0.45 on a third patent for every new user of Amazon devices featuring the artificial intelligence-led, voice-activated assistant Alexa — a “modest” increase over the royalties awarded by a federal jury last year for Amazon’s infringement, US Judge Maryellen Noreika ruled. In her memorandum opinion, the judge said the post-verdict bump is reflective of a 12 percent rise in costs due to inflation between 2021 and 2024. VB Assets sued Amazon in 2019 for infringement of US Patent Nos. 8,073,681, 9,626,703, 7,818,176 and 7,818,176, which relate to smart speaker technology, over the Alexa voice-based virtual assistant feature of the Echo and other Amazon devices.See attached document....
