Four auto insurers fined by South Korean privacy watchdog over illegal marketing consent

( December 12, 2024, 06:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Four South Korean auto insurance companies, including Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance, AXA General Insurance, Hana Insurance and MG Insurance, have been fined 9.2 billion won (about $6.4 million) by the country's privacy watchdog for collecting and using personal information for marketing without proper consent. According to the regulator, the investigation found the companies manipulated their websites to obtain marketing consent from customers who had initially declined. Additionally, all 12 direct auto insurance companies investigated were ordered to improve their data retention practices, with Lotte Insurance receiving a separate 5.4 million won fine for failing to delete customer information after the mandatory one-year retention period.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
