South Korea unveils post-merger aviation plan as Korean Air-Asiana deal closes

( December 11, 2024, 06:28 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea's aviation authorities unveiled plans to foster competition as Korean Air completes its acquisition of Asiana Airlines on Dec. 12, creating an integrated full-service carrier and a combined low-cost carrier. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it will secure and allocate additional route rights to Europe and South Asia to expand low-cost carrier opportunities for medium and long-haul flights, while prioritizing low-cost carrier entry into routes requiring alternative carriers due to antitrust remedies, including routes to China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and Australia. The ministry, together with the Korea Fair Trade Commission, will monitor fares on remedied routes and ensure merged carriers maintain service quality and honor mileage programs by establishing an implementation committee. The statement, in Korean, is attached....
