Facial-recognition technology guidance follows Australian regulator's Bunnings decision

( November 19, 2024, 00:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Australian privacy regulator has issued guidance on use of facial-recognition technology following its determination that hardware giant Bunnings Group breached privacy laws by collecting personal and sensitive information of customers. The guidance published by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner says that businesses using facial-recognition technology that significantly interferes with the privacy of individuals and businesses should consider whether the collection of biometric information is “reasonably necessary to perform a particular function.” The guidance also pushes businesses to consider alternatives to facial-recognition tools like “quality CCTV coverage” and deployment of “covert security guards.”The full guidance by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner follows; the factsheet is attached:...
