US farmer hit with $256,016 default judgment in patent row with agrichemical companies

( November 13, 2024, 10:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Carolina soybean farmer Jimmy Calder must pay Bayer CropScience and its predecessor Monsanto $256,016.66 in royalties plus interest, after he saved Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® and XtendFlex® seeds from a prior harvest for replanting in 2023, a US judge ruled.  The default judgment entered by US District Judge Sarah E. Pitlyk comes in one of several active lawsuits pending against farmers in the Eastern District of Missouri over their alleged infringement of US Patent Nos. 9,944,945 and 7,838,729, which confer seeds with tolerance to glyphosate and dicamba-based herbicides.
