UK fitness equipment retailer loses long running copyright spat with Hong Kong rival

( November 12, 2024, 15:17 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: UK fitness equipment retailer WaterRower (UK) lost a copyright dispute against its Hong Kong-based rival Topiom yesterday after the UK High Court ruled that the design for WaterRower’s wooden rowing machines did not qualify as work of "artistic craftsmanship" under UK copyright law. The court invalidated WaterRower’s copyright claim over its design and held Topiom not guilty of infringement. WaterRower had filed a lawsuit in 2022 alleging that Topiom copied and reproduced a substantial part of WaterRower’s design to make its own wooden rowing machines and infringed its copyright. Topiom had counterclaimed that WaterRower’s design could not be copyrighted as it did not qualify as a work of artistic craftsmanship under UK Copyright law.Judgment is attached....
