Chinese smoke alarm counterfeiters hit with $4.6 million default judgment in trademark row

( November 8, 2024, 10:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Two trademark registrations belonging to the safety testing and certification organization UL Solutions were infringed by a network of Chinese entities maintaining Amazon storefronts, entitling UL to $3.8 million in statutory damages and Amazon $868,393 in actual damages. The awards by US District Judge Tana Lin of the Western District of Washington were ordered jointly and severally against Cao Peng, Shenzhen Tongxin Technology, Shenzhen Haiyongtao Electronics, Shenzhen Peng Chuangxing Technology and Shenzhen Rictron Digital Technology. According to Lin, UL’s trademarks “have attained national and global reputations for technical expertise and integrity and have become symbols of trust and objectivity.” “While large,” Lin said, “Plaintiffs’ requested damages are not so unreasonable relative to the seriousness of the conduct alleged in their complaint.” See attached file....
