Australian government building tool to identify antitrust 'hotspots,' minister says

( November 11, 2024, 06:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: To support Australia’s new merger system, the government’s Competition Taskforce is working with the ACCC to develop a microdata tool to identify “competition hotspots,” a key minister said. In a speech today, Assistant Minister for Competition, Andrew Leigh, said that “competition hotspots” can be considered as segments of the economy where further merger activity could pose risks to competition. The minister added that tool could help inform how the Australian competition regulator administers the new system as well as future ministerial designation of sectors for mandatory notification. Recently, Marcus Bezzi, a senior adviser with the taskforce, said the government was working on a “targeted screening tool,” intended to be a “low-cost approach to capturing below-threshold deals in selected concentrated regions or sectors."The full speech from Assistant Minister for Competition, Andrew Leigh follows:...
