DOJ's Mekki says antitrust laws among most important civil rights laws in US

( November 8, 2024, 01:07 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Champions of civil rights laws in the US have time and time again looked to the antitrust laws to increase the economic opportunity and liberty of ordinary Americans while decreasing the power of monopolies, Doha Meki, the principal assistant attorney general for antitrust at the Department of Justice, said. "We should think harder about calls to subordinate our antitrust and antimonopoly laws purportedly in service of some other social and political values," Mekki said in a speech. At some point, the bonds between those fighting for economic rights and liberties and those fighting for social and political rights weakened and antitrust earned the reputation of being esoteric and technocratic. But, antitrust is about more than greyed out triangles and regression analyses, Mekki said....
