Reopen deforestation law to cut red tape, EU lawmakers propose

By Oscar Pandiello and Laine Cibulskis ( November 7, 2024, 11:56 GMT | Insight) -- The center-right European People's Party has proposed introducing 15 amendments to the European Commission's proposal to delay the entry into force of the EU's Deforestation Regulation by one year, MLex has learned. The amendments, which will be voted on by the chamber next week, would effectively reopen the original law's text, aiming to reduce red tape for affected companies and introduce a new category for countries that meet specific sustainability requirements. Left-wing parties have already announced their opposition to the changes. The European Parliament will vote next week on proposed amendments that would curb the EU’s deforestation rules’ red tape, and create a new “no risk” category tailored for countries that can meet a handful of sustainability requirements....
