EU nominee McGrath ‘very satisfied’ with strengthened Irish data protection authority

By Luca Bertuzzi ( November 5, 2024, 13:21 GMT | Insight) -- Michael McGrath, the nominee to become the EU commissioner in charge of the data protection portfolio, said he is “very satisfied” with how Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner has been strengthened in recent years. As a former Irish finance minister, McGrath was directly involved in the authority’s budgetary negotiations, which he believes led to the regulator being better aligned with its level of responsibility in overseeing the application of the GDPR on major tech companies.Michael McGrath, the European commissioner-designate for justice and consumers, was questioned by EU lawmakers during a three-hour hearing in the European Parliament today before being confirmed for his post (see here and here)....
