Issue of Big Tech's usage of user data should be addressed: Japanese telecom panel

( October 31, 2024, 09:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A working group convened by the Japanese telecom regulator published results of large digital-platform operators' handling of user information. The group under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said that LINE Yahoo, Meta Platforms and Google collect users' device data, website-visit data, cookies, and other data for targeted advertising from third-party websites, even when users do not have accounts or are not logged into their respective services. The report called on the ministry to take measures to address this under the telecom business law. The ministry will also submit the report to the industry ministry, which is enforcing a law regulating large platform operators' dealings with business users.
