New Zealand tax department under fire for sharing data with social-media platforms

( November 5, 2024, 05:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Statement: The New Zealand tax department shared identifiable personal information of individuals with social-media platforms in two instances, the country’s privacy regulator has revealed. In a statement today, New Zealand's Office of the Privacy Commissioner said that Inland Revenue is the custodian of “highly sensitive” tax information of taxpayers. It added that the department had no idea about these incidents that includes the intentional sharing of identifiable personal details of 268,000 New Zealand taxpayers with social-media platforms by a staff member. The regulator said that following the disclosure of the incidents, the tax department stopped supplying custom audience lists to social-media agencies and is notifying affected taxpayers. The regulator has said that although the breaches are not notifiable under the 2020 Privacy Act, it is seeking more information about the incidents because the data of so many people was shared inappropriately. The full statement from the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner follows:...
