Meta fined $15.7 million in South Korea for mishandling sensitive user data

( November 5, 2024, 03:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Meta Platforms has been fined 21.6 billion won (about $15.7 million) and issued corrective orders by South Korea's privacy watchdog for collecting and using sensitive personal information of about 980,000 of the country's users without proper consent. According to the Personal Information Protection Commission, the company not only failed to obtain separate consent but also took no additional protective measures when it gathered and provided advertisers with data about users' religious beliefs, political views and sexual orientation through their Facebook profiles, which was then used by around 4,000 advertisers. The watchdog also penalized Meta for improperly denying users' data access requests and for a security breach that led to the personal information of 10 South Korean users being leaked through forged IDs on an abandoned account recovery page.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
