Pop singer Ed Sheeran prevails in copyright case by 'Let's Get It On' stakeholder

( November 1, 2024, 10:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: In a unanimous decision, the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed findings by the Southern District of New York that only the musical composition of “Let’s Get it On” is covered by the Copyright Act, and that Structured Asset Sales — which owns a stake in the Marvin Gaye hit — cannot assert a copyright interest in the song's specific chord progressions and rhythms, because those elements are too unoriginal for protection. The ruling marks a win for pop artist Ed Sheeran, whom Structured Asset Sales accused of infringement in 2018. Moreover, the panel ruled, no reasonable jury could find that the two songs, taken as a whole, are substantially similar in light of their dissimilar melodies and lyrics.See attached document....
