Data protection authorities form united stance on platforms scraping user data for AI training

By Frank Hersey ( October 28, 2024, 16:51 GMT | Insight) -- As platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and X update their terms of service – sometimes belatedly – to collect user data for training artificial intelligence models, a group of data protection authorities from around the world has issued a statement calling on them to pay close attention to local data protection law and not to breach their own terms of service as well as make multiple efforts to ensure users’ data on the platforms is not scraped by others.Online platforms, particularly social media platforms, have been warned that they are expected to take multiple approaches to protect users’ data from scraping and that if they scrape the data themselves for training AI models, they must be sure they are doing so in compliance with local data protection and AI laws as well as their own terms, says a group of data protection authorities from around the world....
