New Zealand police may be excluded from broader transparency requirement in privacy amendment

( October 25, 2024, 00:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The New Zealand Justice Committee has recommended that the Privacy Amendment Bill be passed only after amendments are made to exclude police from the transparency requirement and to introduce a public archiving exemption. In its final report published today, the Justice Committee said that there should also be an exception for archiving practice where the personal information being collected is in the public interest. The committee noted that the bill as introduced does not include an exemption for the police regarding compliance with Information Privacy Principle 3A and that could undermine police vetting processes. It recommended that the police be exempted under the new law. The 2023 Privacy Amendment Bill aims to expand IPP 3, introducing a subsection that obligates agencies to notify individuals about third-party data collection.
