Meta, Google, Snap, ByteDance 'generally' lose motion to dismiss US schools' addictive algorithm claims

( October 24, 2024, 23:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A federal judge in California 'generally' denied motions to dismiss negligence claims by hundreds of US school systems against Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram, Google's YouTube, ByteDance's TikTok and Snap's Snapchat over the alleged addictive design of the social media platforms. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers wrote that that she disagreed "in most ways" with the defendants' argument that the schools' negligence claims are "too remote or attenuated for the law to redress," although the judge narrowed the scope of the schools' claims due to protections offered by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.See attached order....
