EU’s reliance on Azeri gas must end, European lawmakers say

( October 24, 2024, 15:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The EU should stop relying on Azeri gas, EU lawmakers have said in a resolution denouncing Azerbaijan's violations of human rights and international law. They called for suspending a recent agreement to double the pipeline system's capacity to bring Azeri gas to Europe as well as making new partnerships conditional on human rights improvement and faithfully engaging in peace talks with neighboring Armenia. EU lawmakers also said that Azerbaijan’s human rights abuses are incompatible with the hosting of the next United Nations’ Climate Change Conference COP28 and asked the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to use this international gathering to speak up.Press release follows.
