Big tech to hear from Australian public over online safety expectations, under new law

( August 9, 2021, 00:14 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Social media and technology companies will be expected to meet a set of "Basic Online Safety Expectations" to be put to a public consultation in Australia. The measures, which are part of a new online safety law passed last month, include actions against "volumetric attacks" where victims can face abuse from "digital lynch mobs," Australia's Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said. Australia's eSafety Commissioner will oversee the enforcement of the expectations and be able to issue fines of up to A$555,000 if tech companies fail to respond to the harms the expectations are set to cover. The consultation will run through Oct. 15, with the measures expected to be finalized in early 2022.The full statement from Australia's communications minister follows; the consultation documents are attached. ...
