Plumbing-products maker Kohler fined in China over use of facial-recognition cameras

( August 6, 2021, 02:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US manufacturer of plumbing products Kohler was recently fined 500,000 yuan ($77,000) by the Shanghai branch of the State Administration for Market Regulation for collecting personal information without prior approval of customers, according to a penalty decision dated July 26. Following a TV program in March featuring the use of facial-recognition software in Kohler’s stores, the Shanghai regulator found the company used the software in its 222 stores to obtain customers’ facial features and analyze customer flow, which was then used to design sales policies.  By March 15, Kohler had collected 2.2 million pieces of facial data.
