Facebook wrong to claim privacy settlement blocks 'surveillance-based advertising' disclosures, US FTC says

( August 5, 2021, 23:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Federal Trade Commission's consumer protection chief, in a strongly worded letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, said the FTC's $5 billion privacy settlement in 2019 can't be used as the basis for Facebook to block academic research. "The FTC is committed to protecting the privacy of people, and efforts to shield targeted advertising practices from scrutiny run counter to that mission," said Samuel Levine, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. Levine told Zuckerberg "the FTC supports efforts to shed light on opaque business practices, especially around surveillance-based advertising. While it is not our role to resolve individual disputes between Facebook and third parties, we hope that the company is not invoking privacy – much less the FTC consent order – as a pretext to advance other aims."See attached document....
