Japan messaging app LINE should have assessed foreign government access risk, committee says

( August 5, 2021, 04:27 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: An independent committee looking into Japan messaging app LINE’s data scandal surrounding China access and overseas storage, said that the company needs to be more diligent about understanding foreign data and cybersecurity laws. While no evidence of government access was observed when LINE’s Chinese engineers were given access to Japanese LINE user account data, the group said there was insufficient discussion over China’s Cybersecurity and National Intelligence laws. In its second findings report, the group also checked LINE’s procedural compliance when cooperating with Japanese law enforcement, to ensure user privacy in Japan’s most popular social media app. It also looked into data storage in the contactless payment and healthcare data services, in accordance with the company’s growing platform business.
