South Korean regulator raises partial objection to legislation blocking Google's in-app payment policy

( August 4, 2021, 08:19 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Korea Fair Trade Commission issued a statement clarifying its partial opposition to legislation that would bar Google from enforcing its upcoming in-app payment policy. The bill, which is now awaiting consideration by the Legislative and Judiciary Committee at the National Assembly, proposes amendments to the Telecommunications Business Act that would prohibit app-market operators from abusing developers by forcing certain payment methods and unfairly delaying or deleting apps. The KFTC said it objects to two of the six new provisions — one blocking app markets from compelling or inducing developers not to register their apps with their competitors and one prohibiting discriminatory acts against mobile content businesses. It said the provisions overlap with the country’s competition law and that app-market operators may end up facing double regulations.
