Google seeks dismissal of amended US claims under Illinois privacy law involving educational tools

( August 2, 2021, 23:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google argues that a US lawsuit accusing the company of violating the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act by collecting biometric data and other personal information through its Google Workspace for Education product should be dismissed. The online collection of children's personal information is federally regulated by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which preempts state laws, including BIPA, that treat the same conduct differently, Google said. "COPPA also implicitly preempts BIPA because allowing Plaintiffs to privately enforce their BIPA claim would upset the carefully balanced enforcement framework enacted by Congress," Google said. See document below....
