Softmedia Technology given enforcement notice by Hong Kong regulator over data breach

( June 1, 2023, 09:13 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Hong Kong's privacy regulator has issued an enforcement notice against local IT services provider Softmedia Technology for its failure to protect the personal data contained in a credit database operated by the company, and its failure to ensure that personal data isn't kept longer than is necessary. The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data started an investigation after a complainant reported that his credit data in the system was accessed, without his knowledge nor consent, by eight money lenders unknown to him. The regulator has ordered Softmedia to remedy the contraventions and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents, it said in a statement. About 680 money lenders used Softmedia's TE Credit Reference System, which contained the credit data of about 180,000 borrowers.  The statement follows and the investigation report is attached....
