JD.com lacks options for Hong Kong users to opt out of ads, regulator says

( June 1, 2023, 08:40 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Chinese e-commerce platform JD.com neither provides an option for users during the registration process to indicate whether they accept advertising or promotional messages, nor displays any message seeking their consent, Hong Kong's privacy regulator today said as it released a report comparing the privacy settings of 10 shopping platforms that are popular among local consumers. By comparison, Alibaba's Taobao platform doesn't provide similar options during user registration but allows users to activate or deactivate "personalized recommendations" in their account settings. The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, which also reviewed platforms including eBay, PlayStation App, Samsung and Carousell between March and May, has suggested platform operators provide an option for using personal data in direct marketing, it said in a statement.
