US DOJ opposes Vinnik move to change protective order as he advocates for prisoner swap

( May 26, 2023, 18:28 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US Attorney Ismail Ramsey asked a federal judge to deny a change proposed by defendant Alexander Vinnik to the protective order governing the sharing of evidence in his criminal case over money-laundering by the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange. Vinnik, who was extradited to the US last year after his arrest in Greece, says the change in the protective order is needed for him to advocate for a prisoner swap with Russia. Federal prosecutors said in a court filing that "nothing in the Protective Order prevents defense counsel from advocating for a prisoner swap for his client—which he has done from the outset. Indeed, at Vinnik’s request, the Court already modified the Protective Order to allow him to provide materials directly to the United States Department of State so that he could advocate for such a prisoner swap."
