Uber's failure to report cyberattack, hacker payment breached Australian law, watchdog says

( July 26, 2021, 04:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Uber breached Australia’s privacy law by failing to take reasonable steps to protect 1.2 million local users’ personal information from unauthorized access, according to the country’s privacy watchdog. In a statement released late last week, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner ruled that Uber Technologies and Uber B.V. interfered with the privacy of the users when the companies were victims of a cyberattack in October and November 2016. The determination follows the OAIC’s investigations into US-based Uber Technologies and Dutch-based Uber B.V. “Rather than disclosing the breach responsibly, Uber paid the attackers a reward through a bug-bounty program for identifying a security vulnerability,” the enforcer said. The OAIC has ordered Uber to appoint an independent expert to review and report on its data-protection policies. The full statement by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner follows; the full determination is attached. ...
