Australian police say they use Auror's crime-reporting software to assist small businesses

( May 26, 2023, 04:25 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia’s federal police force has acknowledged that it uses information held by New Zealand-based facial-recognition company Auror and that it has done so since 2021. In a statement to MLex, an Australian Federal Police spokesperson said that the police of the Australian Capital Territory, which is run directly by the federal force, had been working with local retailers that are signed up to Auror to “address instances of crime affecting those businesses.” The AFP has also provided information on its use of Auror to the Australian Senate. In 2021, the Australian Federal Police was found to have violated privacy legislation by signing up for a trial of the US-based facial-recognition technology Clearview AI. The full Australian Federal Police statement to MLex follows; the written answer provided to the Australian Senate is attached. ...
