German animal initiative to abolish ‘welfare surcharge’ next year

( May 25, 2023, 09:41 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Initiative Tierwohl, an animal-welfare project in Germany, has agreed to abolish the current mandatory surcharge — a standard premium payable by buyers to participating farmers — as of next year. The German competition authority said today that it welcomed the step. Initiative Tierwohl will introduce instead a non-binding recommendation on how to fund extra costs incurred by observing animal-welfare criteria. The revision of the financing model shows that it's possible to strike a “balanced solution for including more competition elements in the funding of additional costs at the interface between sustainability and competition,” said the authority's head Andreas Mundt.Statement follows. ...
