SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus fined for false advertising on 5G speed in South Korea

( May 24, 2023, 03:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, South Korea’s top three telecommunications companies, have been hit with a combined preliminary fine of 33.6 billion won ($25 million) and corrective orders by the country’s competition regulator. The Korea Fair Trade Commission found the telecom giants falsely advertised the speed of their 5G networks. The KFTC determined that the companies misrepresented the theoretical maximum speed of 20Gbps as the speed accessible to consumers in everyday usage, whereas the actual average speed was about 0.8Gbps. The agency also found that the companies failed to clarify that the advertised speed could only be achieved under specific conditions that significantly differ from the real-life usage environment.The statement, in Korean, is attached....
