Japanese privacy regulator supports GPA facial-recognition principles

( November 17, 2022, 02:33 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan's privacy regulator has revealed that one of its officials expressed support for a resolution on facial recognition by the Global Privacy Assembly —  an international assembly of privacy authorities. Participating in the GPA assembly in Istanbul last month, an official from the Personal Information Protection Commission expressed Japan’s support for the GPA resolution on the use of personal information in facial recognition technology. The resolution included principles that require a clear legal basis for the collection and use of biometrics, while the PPC is considering additional rules to strengthen its oversight on the use of biometric data. Another PPC official proposed to promote freer cross-border data flow with proper protection by providing options for companies and promoting interoperability among different mechanisms, according to the statement.  A statement in Japanese is attached....
