Educational technology company Edmodo hit by US FTC order requiring algorithm and data

By Mike Swift ( May 23, 2023, 00:48 GMT | Insight) -- The US Federal Trade Commission has obtained a first-of-its-kind order against Edmodo on allegations that the education tech company violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act enforcement rule by collecting children's data and using it to provide advertising without parental consent. The order, which must be approved by a federal judge in San Francisco, would prohibit the company from forcing students to provide more personal data than necessary to participate in an online educational activity, an aspect of the order that the FTC said was a first.In an order that continues the US Federal Trade Commission’s policy of demanding data deletions and limits on collection in privacy enforcement actions, the regulator has obtained a first-of-its-kind order against a California education tech company accused of violating the primary US children’s privacy law....
