Japan to build next-generation semiconductor research lab to support domestic production, METI says

( November 11, 2022, 02:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A research and development center for next-generation semiconductors will be established by the end of this year, which will work with a newly established chip maker to secure the new types of chips domestically, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said. The Leading-edge Semiconductor Technology Center, or LSTC, will be established to collaborate with a US counterpart and others on projects for 2-nanometer and other advanced chips. METI chose a new chip company, Rapidus, which has received investments from Japan’s industry leaders — Sony Group, SoftBank, auto-parts maker Denso, Toyota, chipmaker Kioxia  (formerly Toshiba Memory), NEC, NTT, and Mitsubishi UFJ Bank — to work with LSTC. Rapidus is aiming to mass produce the next-generation chips in the latter 2020s. METI said this is the last chance for Japan, which has lagged behind the US, South Korea and Taiwan in logic-chip developments, to join next-generation chip production.
