Netflix sues Belgium's French Community over financial contribution allowed in EU media law

( August 9, 2024, 09:15 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Netflix has filed a challenge at Belgium’s Constitutional Court against a measure by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation — the French-speaking community in Belgium — that imposes a financial contribution on video-on-demand companies for media production. Under a decree last year, the rate was raised to 9.5 percent from 2.2 percent of a company’s sales in the region, which covers Wallonia and Brussels. Netflix said in a statement that the new investment obligations are “unworkable and contrary to the principles of the single market” of the European Union. Under the EU’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive, countries have the option of imposing a financial contribution on video-on-demand providers for national audio-visual productions.Full statement below:...
