Autonomous ships must meet minimum sizes in US waters, US GAO report says

( August 8, 2024, 18:08 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: As automated shipping develops, the Coast Guard is still enforcing minimum crew sizes in US waters, a Government Accountability Office report notes, writing that “uncrewed or fully autonomous ship technologies may pose new safety risks in the maritime environment and could present challenges to a U.S. legal framework that requires (or is written with a presumption that) crew be aboard and in control of every ship.” According to the report, the shipping industry sees minimum crew requirements as an obstacle to investing in autonomy, prompting Coast Guard officials to monitor the need for revised laws and regulations.See statement below.
